In the past year, Israel, Hezbollah, and other Lebanese groups have exchanged over 12,000 attacks. The Israeli army continues to strike various locations across Lebanon, including the southern city of Nabatieh.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned of “destruction like Gaza,” increasing troop deployment to Lebanon and urging evacuations in southern areas, including parts of Beirut.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health reports that Israeli attacks have resulted in at least 2,255 deaths and over 10,000 injuries. Additionally, more than 1.2 million people have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict.

Israeli bombardment has left towns and villages in southern Lebanon in ruins. The village of Yaroun, located just 1 km from the de facto border, has seen extensive damage. Satellite images from Al Jazeera's verification unit, Sanad, reveal destroyed homes and cratered ground following Israel’s ground invasion that began on October 1.

The conflict intensified when Hezbollah launched its first attacks on Israel on October 8, 2023, in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Since then, Israel has conducted approximately four times as many attacks as Hezbollah, totalling at least 9,891 strikes on Lebanon.

Hezbollah has vowed to cease its attacks if Israel stops its offensive in Gaza. The group, formed in 1982, is recognised as a highly skilled non-state actor, having previously engaged Israel in a 34-day war in 2006.

According to data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), from October 7, 2023, to October 4, 2024, there have been at least 12,054 exchanges of fire, with Israeli strikes responsible for 82% of these incidents. Hezbollah and other Lebanese factions have carried out 2,163 attacks, resulting in the deaths of at least 33 Israelis.

In the last two weeks alone, nearly 2,000 attacks occurred between the two sides. Key locations in southern Lebanon targeted by Israeli forces include Aita al-Shaab, Kfar Kila, and Naqoura.

Regarding military capabilities, Israel possesses advanced missile systems, primarily developed domestically and supplemented by U.S. support. Its arsenal includes a mix of short-range and long-range missiles, as well as integrated air defence systems like the Iron Dome and David’s Sling.

Conversely, Hezbollah is estimated to have around 130,000 rockets, including short-range Grad missiles and longer-range Fajr-3 and Fajr-5 missiles, capable of reaching significant distances into Israel.

As tensions persist, both sides remain entrenched in their military strategies, leading to further uncertainty in the region.
