Despite various initiatives taken by the government, price of onion is not coming down. On Wednesday at Karwan Bazaar kitchen market, per kg local onion was being sold between Tk 115 to Tk 125. While in local shops the price was between Tk 130 to Tk 140.

Government officials concerned are saying that onion price was not coming down due to hoarding of some dishonest traders.

But it seems there is little control of the government offices concerned over the price of onion. According to the government’s sales organisation, Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), onion price has increased by 200 percent in the last one year the country. In only October this year, the price increased by 61 percent.

However, according to the observation of the Ministry of Commerce, the reason behind such uncontrollable price of onion is not the shortage of supply, but the uncontrollable greed of the dishonest traders.

The commerce minister recently has said that it would be logical if the traders would make 12 to 15 percent profit, but they want to make limitless profit. The traders are creating fake crisis of opinion only to make more profits.   However, the commerce ministry is hopeful that the price of onion will come down soon remarkably as huge amount of onion will arrive from abroad in a few days.
