Mongla Port poses risk Mongla seaport of Bagerhat is at risk of coronavirus. Foreign ships carrying sailors from different countries including China are anchoring at the port every day. These sailors are freely entering the port without any medical examination.

As a result, local laborers working to load and unload the ships are at risk of contacting the deadly virus from these sailors. Although some primary steps have been taken by the port authority to prevent the virus, local businessmen and laborers believe that is not enough.

According to port sources, on an average 4 to 5 foreign ships anchor at the port every day. These ships carry 30 to 40 sailors each, which makes a total of 150 sailors entering the port daily. It takes the laborers almost 4 to 5 days to load or unload the ships. At present there are 18 foreign commercial ships anchored at the port. Among the sailors, there are Chinese citizens too. Moreover, there are a lot of Chinese citizens working at Mongla EPZ and in different projects in the area. Therefore, the local people are anxious about Coronavirus spreading in the port area through these foreign citizens.

Although, there is a rule for medical check-up of the sailors it is not being followed, he accused.
