A Jashore court has placed Ajibor Mallik on a two-day remand in a case filed over the theft of 19kg of gold from the Benapole Customs House vault.

Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Saifuddin Hossain granted the remand after hearing on Wednesday.

Police of Criminal Investigation Department appealed for seven-day remand in the court. The court, however, granted remand for two days.

Ajibor Mallik is the son of Atiar Mallik of Barasat village under Terokhada upazila in Khulna. He lives as a tenant in house beside the Customs House.

Burglars looted around 19kg of gold, worth Tk 8.5 crore, from the vault of Benapole Customs House sometime during a three-day holiday that ended on November. The theft came to light after staffers arrived at the office on November 12 morning and found the collapsible gate of the vault broken.

The Special Branch (SB) of Police had temporarily suspended a customs inspector and a sentry over the theft.
