A 20-year-old construction worker, Md. Hasan, was killed and two others were critically injured after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Brahmanbaria on Saturday night.
The accident occurred in the Rampur area of Bijoynagar at about 9:30 pm, police said. The injured have been identified as Siddiq and Sohag, both of whom were taken to hospital in serious condition.
Md. Hasan was a resident of Kutibamndanga village in Bamndanga Union of Nageshwari Upazila, Kurigram, and the son of Gafur Mia. Police said Hasan and the two others worked as labourers under subcontractor Saidul Islam on construction of a six-lane bridge near Shahbazpur First Gate.
According to police and local witnesses, after finishing work on Saturday night the three workers rode a motorcycle to the Budhanti area for a short outing. On their way back, their motorcycle was struck by a CNG auto-rickshaw in Rampura, leaving all three seriously injured.
Local residents rescued them and rushed them to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. Siddiq was later transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Hasan and Sohag were admitted to the Sadar Hospital, where Hasan died while receiving treatment late on Saturday night.
Khantihata Highway Police OC Md. Jahangir Alam said Hasan’s body will be placed in the Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue after it arrives from Dhaka. The injured remain under treatment.
