At least one person was killed and five people went missing after a passenger trawler capsized in the Meghna river in Char Kishoreganj area of Narayanganj's Sonargaon on Friday evening.
Five of the eleven people on board the trawler were rescued and one women’s body later recovered, river police source said.
The missing are Marwa, 8, Sabbir Hossain, 40, Emad Hossain, 2, Sumna Akhter, 28, and her two daughters Mawa, 6, and Safa, 4. They are all residents of Munshiganj's Gazaria, said Sub-Inspector Md Ilyas of Kalagachia River Police Outpost.
The trawler sank around 5:30pm after hitting a bulk carrier, said Inspector Md Habibullah, in-charge of Kalagachia River Police Outpost, quoting the survivors.
The incident happened when the trawler was heading towards the Charkishorganj park area from Munshiganj' Gazaria, he added.
Local eyewitnesses said, "They came to the river in a trawler. Later in the evening, the trawler sank in a head-on collision with the bulkhead. Immediately, two trawlers from the wharf went to the spot and rescued five people."
Munshiganj District Commissioner Md Abujafar Ripon said, "Fire service [diving team] is on the scene.
However, it is not possible to carry out rescue operations at night. It will resume tomorrow morning."
