In a shocking incident in Sarishabari, Jamalpur, seven idols at a Durga Puja temple were vandalised during the early hours of Sunday. The attack took place around 2:30 AM at the Sri Sri Kali Mata Temple in the Tariyapara area of the municipality.
Following a review of CCTV footage, police arrested a local youth, Habibur Rahman Habib (35), on Sunday morning. He is the son of Sohrab Miah from Shimlapalli village, located not far from the temple.
Goyesh Chandra Barman, president of the temple committee, said several idols had been crafted for the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. After preparations were completed, the artisans had departed. On the morning of Mahalaya, the start of the Puja rituals, committee members arrived at the temple to find all the idols vandalised. CCTV footage showed the suspect entering the temple at night and smashing the heads and parts of seven idols.
Mahadev Chandra Saha, convener of the local Puja Celebration Committee, condemned the act and demanded a proper investigation and punishment for the offender.
Sarishabari Police Officer-in-Charge Md Rashedul Hasan confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is underway. The suspect's statement and further discussion with the temple committee will determine the next legal steps.
