Number of cardiac patients increasing at RMCH

The number of patients at the department of Cardiology of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital has been increasing in recent times. With the increased number of patients, the number of deaths at the department has also increased.

RMCH sources informed, the number of admitted patients at the department has surpassed the capacity of management of the hospital that is why the on duty doctors and nurses are often finding it difficult to render proper services for the patients.

According to RMCH sources, at present nearly three-times more patients than the capacity have been admitted to the department of Cardiology. The floors of the wards are full of patients and it is hard for the doctors and nurses to move inside the wards for such a crowded environment. As against the capacity of 56 beds, more than 150 patients are now under treatment at the Cardiology wards.

It is learnt, at present only five specialist physicians are working at the wards. The insiders of the wards informed, at least 10 specialist physicians are required to deal with such a huge number of cardiac patients. The CCU units of the department are always crowded with patients and a serious patient is required to wait in queue to get the service of CCU.

However, the pressure of patients at the cardiology department of the hospital is expected to be eased with the construction of a new 17-storied Cancer Shelter in the hospital by the Ministry of Health within the next two and a half-year.  The works of construction of the building has already been started at the hospital campus. Four floors of the building will hold the Cardiology department, three floors will hold Nephrology department and eight floor will hold the Cancer department.

Hospital sources said, in addition to Rajshahi, patients from Chapainawabganj, Natore, Naogaon, Pabna, Joypurhat, Kushtia and other districts are admitted here to take treatment. As a result of excessive patients than the capacity, double beds are set in the wards and even the patients take treatment by arranging beds on the floors of the wards.

Cardiac patient Selim Uddin of Puthia was taking treatment at the Cardiology ward of the hospital. He informed, his physical condition was improving as the doctors and nurses are regularly monitoring his condition and giving the treatment. But, due to excessive patients at the ward, the doctors and nurses are finding it difficult to tackle everything properly.

Khadiza Begum, wife of a patient at cardiology ward informed her husband has been admitted to the ward three-day ago and his conditions are now improving. She added, the patients get a good treatment at the ward but the crowded environment of ward is troublesome.
