NU to reintroduce admission tests from next session

National University (NU) will bring back admission tests for enrolling students in first-year honours and degree programmes from the next academic session, announced Vice Chancellor Prof ASM Amanullah.

He made the announcement at an event focused on improving educational standards held in Shibganj upazila, Bogura, on 16 November.

Previously, NU admitted students to graduate courses based on their SSC and HSC results, a process introduced in 2022. However, the reintroduction of admission tests aims to enhance academic quality and transparency.

Addressing teachers and students from six colleges, Prof Amanullah unveiled strategic reforms, including updates to the syllabus to improve the quality of degrees and foster stronger industry-academia connections. He also proposed introducing short ICT and technical courses at the degree and honours level to align education with modern needs.

To ensure successful implementation, the university will provide all necessary support, he added.

Prof Amanullah announced that 2025 would be marked as "examination year" for NU. He assured that stalled examinations are being conducted and predicted that 80% of ongoing session jams would be resolved by the end of 2024.

Other initiatives include increasing class attendance, monitoring assignments and in-course assessments, and improving infrastructure at NU-affiliated colleges. A regional office in Bogura is also being planned, he said.

At the event presided over by UNO Tahmina Akter, the VC also addressed support for families of students who lost their lives during the July-August mass uprising. In collaboration with the July Foundation, NU will provide Tk3 lakh to each of these families.

Additionally, family members of the deceased will be given top priority in NU recruitment, he said.

Vice Chancellor of Agriculture University, Gazipur, Prof GKM Mostafizur Rahman, attended as the guest of honour.
