Indian Home Minister Amit Shah told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be implemented nationwide and assured that no person irrespective of religion needed to be afraid. He said no person, no matter what religion he or she followed, needed to be scared. No person irrespective of his or her religion should be worried about NRC, Shah said during a debate on the NRC exercise.

"The NRC exercise was monitored by the Supreme Court...No religion has been targeted or isolated during the NRC exercise," he said. In Assam, the updated final NRC, which validates bonafide Indian citizens, has left out over 19 lakh applicants. The NRC aims to identify illegal immigrants primarily from Bangladesh who entered Assam and settled there after March 25, 1971, and deport them to their native country.

Shah said people whose names were excluded from the final NRC can approach tribunals formed at the tehsil level. The Assam government will provide financial help to those who don't have the money to file pleas, he said adding the government would bear the cost of hiring a lawyer.
