Noni fruit being cultivated commercially at Tangail

Commercial cultivation of Noni fruit trees has been possible to be cultivated successfully at Tangail region. Babul Hossain, a farmer is getting appreciation for cultivating this fruit tree which is resistant to various diseases. The scientific name of 'nani fruit' is 'Marindacitrifolia'. It is an African fruit that grows in tropical region (i.e. Indian subcontinent) too. Babul Hossain planted this tree in Paungli area of Kalihati upazila. Among his planted trees, 70 trees have borne fruits this year.

It is known that this Noni fruit tree bears fruit for twelve months. Currently, this fruit is sold in the market for Tk 2,000 to 2,500 per kg. Its seedlings are also sold from Tk 400 to Tk1000.

The fruit and leaves of Noni tree are both great medicine to increase the immunity of the body. Although now this fruit is unknown to manystill. However, currently, various food and drug manufacturing companies are marketing 'Noni fruit' juice bottles. This fruit can be eaten as a blunt.

Babul Hossain bought some saplings and made a garden in the Paungli area of Elenga municipality in Kalihati upazila of the district 2 years ago with 1 bigha area.

He fenced his entire place with tin. Babul has created a tree nursery on one side of her prepared space. Planted trees in the remaining part are kept by a regular distance of 6 feet. He has 280 trees, big and small.

Many people come to see his medicinal garden out of curiosity. Many one come to see and buy plants and fruits from Babul. The seed can be planted in the roof of the house as well as the balcony by installed tub.

Babul Hossain said, I got to know about the qualities of this Noni fruit tree through various channels including online.

Since then I have bought 50 seedlings through various people by which I have made my garden to this stage. People do not know much about this fruit. So, the fruits are hardly to sell at Tangail.

Some people come after hearing about it. Due to the many qualities of this fruit, many people from surrounding areas come to visit my garden. I think if people know about the benefits of this fruit, the demand will increase a lot.

Anwar Hossain said, I have never heard the name of this fruit before. I came to know from the internet that this fruit and leaves of the tree work for gastric and skin diseases, so I came to see Babul Hossain's garden with my own interest. I planned; I will buy a tree and some fruits when I leave.

Mir Asaduzzaman said, I am from the neighboring area. I know about this fruit. I did not find this fruit tree anywhere at Tangail. This fruit is very useful for allergies and bone joint pain, so I came to his garden to collect it. I will come again if I get benefit from eating the fruits.

Ahsanul Basar, Deputy Director of Tangail Agricultural Extension Department said, Babul Hossain is one of our good entrepreneurs. His newly cultivated Noni fruit tree has now borne fruit.

This fruit functions as medicine for various diseases. The method of eating this fruit is very simple. A lot of awareness has increased among people regarding this fruits as it is especially beneficial to health.

The newly known people are collecting these fruits for eating. By quality, we have come to know that this fruit even works to prevent cancer. The fruits and leaves of this plant are used to cure old rheumatic pains. As vegetable trees are decreasing in our country, we need to plant herbs for our body and nature more by planning.

That is why entrepreneurs like Babul Hossain have come forward in the vegetable industry. We hope, more entrepreneurs like Babul Hossain will be created.
