No sign of revival for Nabinagar Public Library

Published : 06 Aug 2022 08:55 PM

Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria has a public library for a long time. A one-storied and tinned building stands on 5 percent of the land purchased in the name of this public library. On April 16, 1986, the then Deputy Commissioner Md. Nizam Uddin laid the foundation stone of this public library.

Due to various complications including the negligence of the administration and non-payment of the librarian's salary, the library was closed over time. Although the local journalists brought this library to the attention of the administration several times, the local book lovers did not get any desired results. In 1916, some local journalists and cultural workers started a movement to open a library. As a result of the movement, the then Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Azizul Islam renovated the building with the aim of opening the library at a cost of several lakhs of taka. A constitution was also prepared for the registration of the library.

Principal of Nabinagar Government High School. Abu Mocha convener and journalist Mahabub Alam Liton as member secretary of the 7-member constitution drafting sub-committee prepared a timely constitution after long hard work and handed it over to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer. At that time, subscriptions were also collected from various members of the Sudhi community for the purchase of books. However, the library was not fortunate enough to see the light of day. However, culture and media workers did not give up. Mohammad Masum took the initiative to start it after joining the Upazila Nirbahi Officer in 2019. He also modernized it and renovated it at the expense of several lakhs of rupees. Books worth lakhs of rupees have been bought from Sudhisamaj. Those books are still in bundles in the library. Nabi Nagar Public Library Management is managed by Executive Officer Mohammad Masum, Convenor Abu Kamal Khandkar, Dr. Ahmed Hossain, Chair Mammon Azahar Hossain Jamal, Journalist Mahabub Alam Liton, A-League Leader Nashir Uddin, Cultural Worker Abbas Uddin Helal and NGO Worker Asaduzzaman Kallol. Formed the committee. The question in the public mind is why the library cannot be opened even though it has been repeatedly launched?

The activists said that the library needs a full-time librarian. It may not be running because of the tension of the administration over which sector the librarian's salary will be paid. In this regard, the former president of the press club and member of the library management committee, Mahabub Alam said, "Although it has been renovated and books bought in two stages during the long movement, it cannot be kept open temporarily as there is no librarian." Upazila Administration, Upazila Parishad and Municipal authorities are repeatedly demanding the appointment of a librarian and no arrangements are being made.

In this regard, Brahmanbaria district librarian Saiful Islam Milon said that the upazila public library has no registration and no committee, so it is being deprived of facilities by the government. Action will be taken if an application is made to me along with the library constitution and executive committee.

In this regard, the current Nabinagar upazila executive officer Ekramul Chiddik said that this library was discussed in the upazila law and order meeting. Necessary measures will be taken after considering how to make it operational.
