‘No discrimination between plains and hills for getting state services’

Central coordinator of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Hasnat Abdullah on Wednesday said there will be no difference between the dwellers of plains and hills in all sectors, including getting education, health and state service.

Hasnat Abdullah came up with the assertion while speaking to the Bandarban students at a view-exchange meeting at Khudra Nrigosthi Sangskritik Institute (KSI) hall room at 11:00am on the day.

He also said people from all walks of life joined the liberation war in 1971, anti-dictatorship movement against Ershad in 1990, and the movement against autocrat fascist Sheikh Hasina government in 2024. He urged the students to remain united to build the country after reform of state at the same way as they became united during the movement to oust the autocratic government.

He also said that it is harder to preserve the freedom than to achieve it. The freedom is to be safeguarded based on consensus. The former autocratic government destroyed all the constitutional institutions including judiciary, legal department and election commission. It also destroyed the faith and trust of the people. So our battle will continue until people’s faith in those constitutional institutions is restored and the country is reformed. The quality of education system needs to be changed in Bandarban. The standard education and healthcare that can be accessed in Dhaka has to be provided in Bandarban as well.

He said that the dwellers of hills and plains should be equal while getting state services. There will be no discrimination between the plain land and hill dwellers. There are geographical distance between land areas and hill areas based on their geographical position. He said this distance can be eliminated with technology. Mentioning that the country is in deep economic crisis, he also said Tk 11,00,000 crores have been siphoned off from the country and that money laundered abroad in the last 16 years.

Urging the students to play a leading role to stop extortion, terrorism, bribery, corruption, recruitment business, tender manipulation in the country, Hasnat Abdullah said if those who are involved in extortion and tender manipulation want to install any political party, the students will reject them and they will be ousted like the previous fascist government. The students will help the administration to stop extortion, tender manipulation and bribery. If the administration is people-oriented rather than power-oriented, then they will not have to flee from the country like Harun and Benzir. The cooperation of the administration is essential. So if the administration does not help the interim government, the students will not remain inactive. Referring to the unexpected incident that occurred at the secretariat on Tuesday over the appointment of Deputy Commissioners (DC) as they feared administration coup, Hasnat Abdullah said Abu Sayed, Mugdha, Hridoy and many others sacrificed their lives. It hurts the students that you cannot even resist from the temptation of a post.

Student leaders Khan Talat Rafi, Aung Aung, central coordinator and students of Bandarban were present at the view-exchange meeting.
