‘No ban on bikes, e-bikes on highways’

Published : 15 Nov 2022 09:32 PM

Movement of motorcycles, battery-run auto-rickshaws and easy bikes will be closely monitored on the highway instead of putting ban on them.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this at the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) meeting held at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) auditorium in the capital on Tuesday.

The council approved the National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan (2021-24) to reduce 25 percent road accident by 2024 and 50 percent by 2030.

The minister said, “The authorities concerned will closely monitor the movement of battery-run auto-rickshaws and easy bikes on Dhaka-Aricha, Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Tangail, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chittagong highways. Since there is a directive from the High Court that these three-wheelers cannot ply on the highways, we will closely monitor these five highways.”

“We are putting emphasis on controlling those instead of giving restriction. By controlling them we

will try to reduce the untoward accident on the highways. A specific guideline will be prepared shortly in this regard,” added the minister.

Talking about Tk 4080 crore World Bank loan, the minister further said, “We are working on a project related to road safety with the financial support of the World Bank. DPO of this project is also ready that will go to ECNEC meeting soon. Following the approval we will go for implementation as we need road safety.”

While replying to questions the minister also informed that from now on applicants will be able to have their driving licence sitting at homes. Those who will apply for driving licence from today (Tuesday) will be able to avail of this service.

The minister said that the applicant has to come to the BRTA office only once for the test.

Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, Road Transport Secretary ABM Amin Ullah Noori, Member of Parliament and Transport leader Shajahan Khan, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapos, BRTA Chairman Noor Mohammad Majumdar, BRTC Chairman Tajul Islam, Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Directorate AKM Monir Hossain Pathan and others were present in the meeting.
