New Mayor Anwaruzzaman vows to work for development of Sylhet city

Newly elected mayor of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Md Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury took charge of his office on Tuesday (November 8, 2023), pledging to work for the development of the city.

The Awami Leauge-backed mayor took charge of the SCC five months after winning the city polls.

Outgoing BNP-backed mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury greeted Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury in the mayor’s office at Nagar Bhaban and handed over the charges to him.

Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmed, who is also MP from Sylhet-4 constituency, was present on the occasion.

Later, a programme to welcome the new mayor in presence of people was held in front of Nagar Bhaban with chief executive officer (CEO) of SCC Fahima Yeasmin in the chair. 

Minister Imran Ahmed attended the event as the chief guest, while divisional commissioner of Sylhet Abu Ahmed Siddique, deputy commissioner (DC) Sheikh Rasel Hasan, Police Commissioner Md Elias Sharif, Police Super Md Abdullah Al Mamun, and chairman of Sylhet Zila Parishad Advocate Nasir Uddin Khan were also present, among others,

Speaking at the event, new SCC Mayor Md Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury said, “I am grateful to all for electing me as the mayor. I wish to keep up my good work as mayor with the help of everyone.”

He vowed to work for the development of Sylhet city as an elected mayor.

Outgoing SCC mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury greeted mentioned his 10 years of hard work to develop the city and pledged to extend his support to the new mayor.

On June 21, Awami League mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury won the Sylhet City Corporation election with 118,614 votes defeating his nearest rival Jatiya Party contender Nazrul Islam Babu who secured 50,321 votes.
