President Abdul Hamid is likely to start holding dialogues with the country’s all political parties from the next week in order to form a new election commission as the tenure of the current one will expire in February next year.

The 12th parliamentary election is scheduled to be held by December 2023 or early 2024 and the new election commission will conduct the country’s next general polls. We hope interaction between the president and other political parties will play a key role in forming an independent, sovereign, neutral, acceptable, strong and effective election commission. We expect that the fresh election commission will be constituted at the call of the president through search committee after discussing with all registered political parties while there will be representation of all parties including Bangladesh Nationalist Party and opposition Jatiya Party.

Some elements have already started hatching

new conspiracies centering the formation of

new election commission

The president will appoint a new chief election commissioner and election commissioners based on search committee’s recommendations. Therefore, based on consensus of country’s all registered political parties, the next election commission should be constituted and acceptable to all as well.

Political parties having representatives in the Jatiya Sangsad and other major parties registered with the election commission will be invited to the dialogue. However, Jamaat-e-Islami does not have any scope to take part in the President’s dialogue due to cancellation of its registration as party had committed crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

As per article 118 of the Constitution, the honourable President, the head of the state, will hold dialogue with registered political parties before appointing the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners. But the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and some elements have already started hatching new conspiracies centering the formation of new election commission. It is very clear to us that they are making their evil attempts to make the election commission controversial as the country approaches the next parliament elections.

The outgoing EC was constituted at the call of the President Abdul Hamid through search committee after discussing with all registered political parties while there was representation of all parties including Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Therefore, we think the new election commission will also be formed in all acceptable ways this time too. Besides, different political parties will give their different opinions over the formation of election commission and hope that these proposals and opinions will help the formation of a strong commission. Therefore, all invited political parties should participate in the President’s talk and take initiatives to reach a consensus for a new election commission.
