Distortion is the mistake of misrepresenting any fact. And according to researchers distorting a language is the worst level of distortion there can be. It hampers a nation from building the backbone of a country. In this era, the youngsters always tend to let others know and boaster that they are the best. As a result, people who call themselves ‘students’ are always in a mood to represent something new. It can make the society better, but only if their idea is to be a change maker. But it cannot be achieved by distorting our language.
These days, everyone is connected with the social media. So, within a moment’s notice we get the news of what’s happening in the United States or anywhere else in the world. We know that it is one of the best sides of social media.
On the other hand, sometimes we see posts or comments or photos on Facebook which really represent the ulterior side of human beings, which cannot be brandished in front of the society. And it gets worse sometimes.
We all have that ‘friend’ on social media who can’t spell the words while writing, or can’t even pronounce. For this, some news could be easily misinterpreted. Most of the time, we borrow from other languages, but we do not use it in a proper way. Then it gets mixed, which is called distortion.
Our language has progressed through many achievements. But this is not how it’s going to work. Nowadays, we see some Facebook pages making fun of Bangla words. They use words or sentences which is ‘Banglish’. It means, it’s not Bangla nor is it English rather it is something in the middle. Some youths are distorting the language on their own. It is making a very bad impact on the society. There are so many examples of distorting Bangla on social media, like – Guti, Franss, Chorom, Jigay, Hoppe, Munchay, Pera, Lul, Khrp, Oka, and many more. It is unimaginable to not find people using such texts in their everyday life. People are taught in the class rooms that language is always in a flow but this flow is plain and simple derogatory!
There’s another problem with the messages in our mobile phones which is sent from the government or telecommunication company. Some of those messages are written in Bangla using English letters which is very unprofessional for a government spokes media to convey messages in such a state.
It gets worse when the young generation of the country do not speak Bangla properly on FM Radio or during cultural or other activities. Their part would be great if they try not to distort our language. But these things are happening most of the time in channels weather it is a radio or television.
To create a good impact of Bangla language among the mass, government should take necessary steps soon. But as language is medium that reflects our mind, the only way not to distort our language is to know it first, and make them aware who are distorting Bangla on social media or anywhere while using it.
