Supporters of Abdul Hannan Masud, the Shapla Kali symbol candidate nominated by the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) for the Noakhali-6 (Hatiya) constituency, held a protest march and staged a demonstration outside Hatiya police station after Masud received death threats on social media.
On Friday night, Masud’s supporters held a protest rally in Uchkali Bazaar in Hatiya. They later gathered at the main gate of Hatiya Police Station as part of the demonstration before dispersing after a short while.
Locals reported that on the night of Thursday (18 December), a Facebook account under the name “Rupok Nandi” posted a warning of severe consequences directed at Abdul Hannan Masud. The post quickly went viral on social media, creating tension in the area. It read, “Hannan, do not play with fire. You will regret it later.” At the same time, former chairman Abdul Halim Azad was reportedly arrested, and a ban on Masud in Hatiya was announced. A general diary (GD) was filed at the police station regarding the incident.
In protest, Masud’s supporters organised a rally after sunset on Friday, starting from Hatiya Island Government College, marching through Uchkali Bazaar, and holding a demonstration outside Hatiya Police Station. During the protest, they demanded that the person responsible for the threats be swiftly arrested and brought under the law.
Regarding the matter, Officer-in-Charge of Hatiya Police Station, Saiful Alam, stated that the police station was not “besieged” but that the protest took place in front of the college near the station. He also mentioned that the police are searching for the individual responsible for the threats.
