Newly-elected mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Dr Selina Hayat Ivy and 36 councillors of the NCC were sworn-in on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath to the NCC mayor while Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam administered the oath to the 36 councillors, including 9 councillors of reserved women seats.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the capital’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the morning.
Prime Minister took part in the swearing-in ceremony virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban while LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam joined the function in- person at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
NCC mayor Ivy and 36 councillors were present in-persons at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
The NCC election was held on January 16 last. Awami League candidate Dr Selina Hayat Ivy was elected mayor for the third consecutive term.
She defeated her nearest rival Taimur Alam Khondker by 66,535 votes in the election.
Ivy, with the symbol of ‘Boat’, secured 1, 59,097 votes to win against independent candidate Taimur Alam Khandakar, who bagged 92,166 votes with the ‘Elephant’ symbol.
It should be mentioned here that Ivy, the first female city mayor in the country’s history, became the NCC mayor for three consecutive times.
While speaking at the swearing-in ceremony Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged all the public representatives to work for the welfare of the people, who are sources of all the power.
Sheikh Hasina also said that the NCC polls proved again that the people never make any mistake as they have elected their favorite candidates in a free, fair and neutral election.
"The people never do mistakes and that's the reality... It has been proved again in the NCC elections,” she said.
Expressing thanks to the Election Commission (EC) and the law enforcement agencies for holding free and fair elections in NCC, she said through this polls, the people have exercised their voting rights and elected the candidates of their choice.
