It has been 43 years since the death of our beloved National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The legacy of the rebel-poet will forever live on. People who speak Bengali language will never forget the contribution of Kazi Nazrul Islam in Bengali literature.

Nazrul produced a large body of poetry and music with themes that included religious devotion and spiritual rebellion against all sorts of persecution.

To mark the occasion, Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television, and other private television channels and radio stations aired special programmes, while the national journal published special supplements.

Dhaka University (DU) Central Mosque arranged a dua mahfil and different organizations held discussions at the campus. Teachers, students and officers of Dhaka University and other political and socio-cultural organisations placed an arrangement of flowers at the grave of the national poet.

On the day, Bangla Academy arranged a solo lecture session with National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman as the chair. Also Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Shishu Academy and Nazrul Academy arranged various social culture programmes. Many other organizations also arranged special programmes and musical events across the country.

Nazrul was a great poet, musician and philosopher. His writings explored themes such as freedom, humanity, love, and revolution. There are almost 4000 Nazrul geet and Nazrul sangeet composed. The whole world got inspirations from Nazrul’s poems and songs during the great Liberation War in 1971.

At the age of 77 on 12th Bhadro of the Bengali calendar year 1383 (August 29, 1976), Nazrul breathed his last in Dhaka at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital. He was buried with state honours beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque.
