Nat’l Disaster Preparedness Day observed in Satkhira

On the occasion of the National Disaster Preparedness Day, Disaster Preparedness exercise, rally, discussion meeting and award distribution ceremony were held in Satkhira keeping in mind the slogan "Fight Disaster Preparedness and Build Smart Sonar Bangla".

A disaster preparedness exercise was conducted in front of the District Commissioner's Office under the supervision of District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Bached, organised by the Directorate of Disaster Management, Satkhira on Sunday.

After the exercise, a colorful rally with banner festoons and placards was taken out under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Humayun Kabir. At the end of the rally round the important roads of the city, the discussion was held in the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner.

After that a discussion meeting was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Humayun Kabir. In the speech of the chief guest, he said that to prevent disasters, we have to create tolerance and more public awareness. There is no substitute for public awareness in disaster prevention. He also said that parents and common people should be made aware through training of students. We will be aware of ourselves and make others aware. 

Disaster prevention is currently costing us more resources and relatively less loss of life.

Local Government Division Satkhira Deputy Director Mashruba Ferdous, Water Development Board Satkhira Division - 2 Executive Engineer Ashikur Rahman, Additional District Magistrate Bishnupad Pal, Satkhira District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Bached and others spoke as special guests.

Among others, Satkhira Sadar Upazila Project Implementation Officer Yarul Haque, Satkhira Fire Service Station Officer Md. Shimul Rana, Sushilan Satkhira Deputy Director GM Moniruzzaman, Desh TV Satkhira District Representative Sharifullah Kayshar Sumon, Bangladesh Betar Khulna Satkhira District Representative Farooq Mahbubur Rahman, Satkhira Red Crescent Youth Member Munni Akhtar, Sudipta Debnath and others spoke among the students.

Satkhira District Administrative Officer, members of District and Upazila Disaster Management Committee, teachers of various institutions, youth members of Red Crescent, students and journalists of print and electronic media were present.

BSS from Gaibandha adds: The National Disaster Preparedness Day-2024 was observed in the district as elsewhere in the country Sunday with a call to expedite disaster preparedness programmes among the people to reduce the loss of lives and properties.

This year’s theme of the day was “Durjog Prostuti te Lorbo, Smart Sonar Bangla Gorbo”.

Marking the day, the district administration in association with non-government organizations chalked out various programmes.

In the morning around 10 am, a big rally was brought out from the campus of Gaibandha Government High School of the town and ended on the ground of Islamia High School here.

Then a discussion meeting was also held with NDC (Nezarat deputy collector) Md Jewel Miah in the chair. Additional deputy commissioner (Development and Human Resources Management) Sushanta Kumar Mahato addressed it as the chief guest.

Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Md. Zakir Hossain, Sadar upazila project implementation officer Md. Reaz, assistant coordinator of SKS Foundation Md. Ashraful Alam addressed the function, among others.

The speakers said flood, river erosion, cold wave and drought are the main natural calamities of the district and every year the disasters visited the district creating untold sufferings of the affected people.
