New early varieties of beans have started appearing in Naogaon market. Farmers are benefiting by getting good price of early variety beans. The cultivation of this bean is known to the farmers as Bhadra bean (bean of Bhadra month).
According to the farmers, a part of the profit goes to the control of bean insects. According to the District Agriculture Extension Department, beans have been planted in about 300 hectares of land in the district. Among the early varieties of beans are known as Kartika, Kajla and Chalta.
Azizar Mandal, a farmer from Jhikra village in Barshail union of Sadar upazila, said he has planted Bhadra beans on 8 kathas of land. To cultivate beans in this amount of land, he has spent about four thousand taka for bamboo, one thousand taka for weeding and six thousand taka for medicine.
Early varieties of beans have been planted in the month of Jaistha. Beans will be raised from Bhadra to Magh. I will start picking beans in the next 8-10 days.
In the beginning, beans were sold for three and a half to four thousand taka. Prices are a little lower when the beans start to rise. Even then, they are sold for at least 400 to 500 taka per maund. One gram of beans will be grown every week. As much as four maunds a month.
Some, including farmers Nasir Uddin and Abul Kashem, said they had planted early varieties of red beans. Beans will start sprouting in the next few days. However, this time due to frequent rains, the rotting of bean trees has caused some damage.
Naogaon Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer AKM Mofidul Islam said a lot of vegetables are planted in Barshail, Raktitpur and Baktarpur Unions of the upazila. Instead of paddy, they grow vegetables in the hope of making more profit.
Farmers are benefiting a lot from planting beans in advance, but water has started flowing in the flood-hit areas. Vegetable seeds will be promoted in those areas.
