Nabinagar people in dire need of a new bridge

Published : 08 Sep 2022 08:26 PM

Thousands of people from 7 villages of the Nabinagar Upazila are crossing the Bhata River through the dilapidated bamboo bridge in Fatehpur village in Brahmanbaria every day risking their lives for a long time. Accidents often happen due to the risky condition of this bamboo bridge.

About 300 meters long, this bamboo bridge is the only means of communication with Nabinagar for about 2 lakh people of 7 villages in that area. Established in 1937, Fatehpur Government Primary School, Nabinagar West Union Parishad Building, Hazrat Walishah Mazar Sharif and several mosques-madrasas and kindergartens are located in the area.

According to local residents, even though they crossed this river by boat, the underprivileged people of the area have been building this bridge every year with their own funds in order to earn their living. About two to three lakh Tk are spent to make this bamboo bridge. Its construction and repair work is done by collecting subscriptions from the local residents.

However, though the length of this bamboo bridge was 300 meters in the beginning, it has now become 200 meters due to soil filling around its banks. If a bridge is constructed here instead of bamboo bridge, the long-standing demand of the local residents, the people of the area would have benefited as well as the students of Komalmati School and the elderly would have been saved from various unexpected accidents.

In this regard, the Chairman of the West Union Parishad said that in order to fulfill the long-standing demands of the local residents, the construction of this bridge has been requested several times, but the residents have not seen the face of the desired bridge so far.

Upazila Parishad Chairman Mohammad Moniruzzaman Monir said that our MP has sent to the Ministry for the approval of this bridge. Hopefully the bridge will be approved soon.
