A murder accused was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and policemen at Bancharampur upazila in Brahmanbaria early on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Sujan Mia, 26, of Jagannathpur village. He was accused in six cases filed over murder, robbery and mugging. He was also an accused in a case filed over killing one Mahbub Hasan Babu, cousin of Sujan.

Salahuddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Bancharampur Model Police Station, said that on information, police conducted a drive at Bhelanagar to arrest Sujan and his associates. Sensing presence of police personnel, alleged criminals opened fire, prompting the lawmen to fire back that triggered a gunfight, he said. Sujan was caught in the line of fire while the others managed to flee, the OC added.

After the gunfight, police rescued Sujan and took him to Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Five police members sustained injuries during the gunfight, OC Salahuddin said.

Police also recovered a pipe gun, four bullets and locally-made weapons from the spot. The body was sent to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
