The houses made of mud popularly known as air-conditioned houses of the poor are disappearing due to the touch of modernity. Buildings made of brick and stone are taking the place of traditional mud-houses in the rural villages of the country.
However, the peace of living in mud-houses is rarely found in the buildings made of brick and stone. With the evolution of time, it can be said that this well-known mud-house is on the way to extinction in different villages of the upazila.
The mud-built house is comfortable in both the winter and hot season. So poor people of the village as well as many rich people used to build mud-houses for comfort.
It is known that mud houses have been in practice since ancient times. Sticky soil is turned into clay and walls were made widening two to three feet. A 10-15 feet high wall was made of wooden or bamboo ceiling and covered with thatch or tin canopies. Mud-houses were often built up as two storied.
It took more than three-four months for the artisans to make these mud-houses. Housewives used to make different types of designs on the walls mud-houses to enhance the beauty of their own living room.
Once, many families in different areas of the upazila felt comfortable living in mud-houses. In various areas of Tangail, these traditional mud-houses are still seen occasionally.
In Mujibar Mia's house of Bakchala village of Ghatail upazila of Tangail, the nest of mud -houses full of old memories is observed.
Mujibar Mia said, my grandfather had a mud-house. My father lived after he died. The house is still there. I still left the mud-house as keeping the old memories of my grandfather. However, to keep up with the times, many people are building houses of brick. So mud houses are gradually disappearing.
Md Nasir Uddin Principal Sagar dighi College of the Upazila said that although mud-houses are comfortable for living, most of the people are demolishing mud-houses and build houses made of bricks as concrete house for better living and more security.
