MPs demand climate change action

Members of the Parliament from coastal areas have demanded “effective steps” to overcome the harmful impacts of climate change in their districts.

They made the demand at a press briefing on Tuesday at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, pointing to the fact that super cyclone Amphan and Yaas caused colossal damage to the lives and livelihoods of their respective constituencies during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mir Mostaq Ahmed Robi MP, coastal people's representative and convener of the Citizens' Forum, presided over the event organised by the civic organisation 'Sundarbans and Coastal Protection Movement' and the non-governmental development organisation 'Faith in Action'.

Aktaruzzaman Babu of Khulna-6, Amirul Islam Milon of Bagerhat-4, SM Shahzada of Patuakhali-3 and Syeda Rubina Akter, reserved women's constituency and Advocate Gloria Jharna Sarkar spoke on behalf of the members of parliament at the event conducted by Nikhil Chandra Bhadra, coordinator of the Sundarbans and Coastal Protection Movement.

DRU President Morsalin Nomni, journalist Ashish Kumar Dey, and SCAS Chairman Jasmine Prema also spoke, among others.
