The government is trying to bring back the past glory of jute, the golden fibre of Bengal, turning it into a high-income generating crop once again through making jute goods popular among the people.

The use of eco-friendly jute as an alternative natural fibre has gained momentum because of the widespread public awareness about the harmful effects of plastic and polythene on the global environment.

Sources in the government say the government has been working to find new markets abroad aiming at reviving the golden era of the jute industry.

They also laid importance on diversification of jute products and attractive designs to attract the buyers at home and abroad.

As part of the government’s initiatives, the genome sequencing of jute has already been decoded while scientists have been conducting research works for developing the variety of jute, one of the foreign exchange earning sectors of the country. Marking National Jute Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate six textile mills and a fair of jute goods at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre Thursday.

After taking the helm of the

textiles and jute ministry, Jahangir Kabir Nanak said he would work to build a Smart Textiles and Jute sector in Bangladesh.

“The work will be done to formulate and implement a plan for the building of a smart textiles and jute sector,” he said.

Nanak said under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, modernization work will be done by utilizing new innovations in the jute and textile sector in keeping with “Vision 2041”.

Nanak said the jute sector would be transformed radically to increase the export of the eco-friendly products.

Export of jute and jute products would immensely help strengthen the national economy, he said, urging everyone linked with jute production to work together to increase the export abroad.

The government has also urged the private sector to come forward for the development of the jute industries.
