The government has taken an initiative to set up a  58.50-km cost effective, jam-free and safe road communication system from Manikganj to Tangail for boosting the overall socio-economic condition.

As part of the move, the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges is undertaking a project titled “Upgradation of Aricha (Barangail)-Ghior-Daulatpur-Nagarpur-Tangail Regional Highway (R-506) to proper quality and width.”

The total implementation cost has been estimated at Tk 1,635.10crore.

According to a Planning Commission official, the Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting was held on June 16 last year on receiving a proposal from the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.

It has been recommended to present the project at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), he mentioned.

If approved, it will be implemented by June 2024 by the Department of Roads and Highways (RHD), he added.

Mamun-al-Rashid, a member of the Physical Infrastructure Division of the Planning Commission in charge of the project, said that if the proposed project was implemented, a safe, improved and

cost-effective road communication system would be established between Tangail district and Manikganj district in the shortest possible time.

“Besides, the overall socio-economic condition of the people of the project area will be improved. So, the project rightly deserves approval,” he added.

The project proposal stated that the Aricha (Barangail)-Ghior-Daulatpur-Nagarpur-Tangail Highway (R-506) is an important regional highway.

The road is 59-km-long from Barangail in Manikganj to Nagarjalfi on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.

Therefore, 58.50-km road development has been proposed under the project, of which the length of Tangail section is 40-km and the length of Manikganj section is 18.50-km.

However, the highway is directly connecting  Mymensingh and Dhaka divisions.

The main activities of the project include the  acquisition of 132.35 hectares of land, earthwork on road embankments, road construction, pavement widening, pavement reinforcement, hard

solder, elevation of existing roads, bend simplification, surfacing, rigid pavement, RCC girder bridge, PC girder bridge. New underpasses and RCCU drains will also be constructed.
