For the betterment of the lot of the rural people the government has taken the initiatives in empowering the rural people with financial support through small and medium sector.
The government has been providing financial and policy support especially for women who are involved in the dairy and handloom sectors.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Swapan Bhattacharjee said this while speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day- long auditing training programme at the cooperatives department at the city’s Agargaon on Tuesday.
He said, "The LGRD minister has been working to identify and solve the problems the country's cooperative sector is facing and urged the people to work together to make the government's cooperative movement a success".
He said his ministry would not tolerate any corruption and irregularities in the cooperatives sector because the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been maintaining zero tolerance against corruption.
The state minister said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave cooperatives sector the constitutional recognition and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has attached the highest priority to this sector for the economic development of the country's rural area.
He said cooperatives sector was destroyed after the killing of the Bangabandhu, but after returning to power, the Awami League government took steps to revive the cooperatives sector for changing the lot of rural people. Highlighting the importance of training of audit officials, he said efficiency of the audit officials must be improved to check irregularities and corruption.
The state minister asked the department of cooperatives to create a post of assistant registrar (audit) at district level and maintain rules and regulations for registering cooperatives societies. The transparency and integrity must be maintained in the sector, he added.
Registrar and director general of the department of cooperatives Md Aminul Islam presided over the opening session while registrar Anjan Kumar Sarkar, Md Nabirul Islam and Mahbubur Islam, among others, spoke on the ocassion.
