In Noakhali’s Companiganj upazila, a mother’s burial was delayed for 20 hours due to a family dispute over 12 decimals of land.

The incident took place on Thursday at Enu Mia’s house in Shahjadpur village under Sirajpur Union’s Ward No. 9. The deceased, Amena Begum (65), wife of the late Maulana Selamat Ullah, had died on Wednesday evening at her daughter’s in-laws’ house in Begumganj upazila.

According to local sources, before her death, Amena Begum’s younger son, Saifullah, had some family property registered in his own name, angering his elder brother, Najib Ullah. When the body was brought home, a heated argument and scuffle broke out between the two over the inheritance.

Upon receiving the news, Companiganj Assistant Commissioner (Land), Rubaiya Binte Kashem, arrived at the scene. She mediated an understanding between the brothers, and Amena Begum was finally buried beside her husband’s grave at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Confirming the incident, AC (Land) Kashem said, “A preliminary settlement has been reached, and a local meeting will be held to resolve the land dispute permanently.”
