Mosquito menace on the rise again

After a short period Dhaka city residents are enduring mosquitoe menace again as the mosquito population has been on the rise largely to blame for lack of proper and regular spray of pesticides.

Day and night most of the city dwellers are restless due to mosquito bites. Citizens have to endure mosquito infestation including in houses, offices, courts, restaurants and in all sorts of public transports.

Ayesa Akther, a resident of Siddeshwari area said, “It is quite annoying when mosquitoes constantly bite day and night. We are forced to using mosquito nets while resting in bed during the day time.”

Regarding spraying of insecticides by the city corporation, she said, “When the city corporation sprays insecticides during the late evening hours the mosquitoes from outside force their way indoors to escape being exposed to the sprays.”

Visitors paying visits to one of the best neatly decorated leisure spots in the city in Hatirjheel also have to deal with mosquito bites. The city dwellers who come to spend their leisure time sitting in different places on the shores of the lake have to endure mosquito bites.

Mahbuba Sultana, also a visitor to Hatirjheel said that the people who come to visit Hatirjheel feel very uncomfortable being constantly bitten by mosquitoes.

Abdul Baset from Dhanmondi said that mosquito infestation increases every year during this time. Not relying on the city corporation, they are taking extra precautions.

Moreover, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area including Dhanmondi, Nilkhet, Newmarket, Panthapath, Moghbazar, Paltan, Gulistan, Motijheel, Kamalapur, different areas of old Dhaka, Matuail, Dhania, Sayedabad, Jatrabari, Maniknagar and almost all area people are facing serious mosquito menace.

City Corporation sources said that insecticides are being sprayed every morning and evening to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. City Corporation officials have urged the citizens to keep the yard clean and tidy for their own protection.

On the other hand, it is learned that mosquito population has increased to a great extent in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas including Gulshan, Banani, Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Uttara, Tejgaon, Vashantek, Badda, Rampura, Hatirjheel and Banasree.

Officials of the two city corporations claimed that the canal cleaning work is the reason for the increase in mosquito infestation. For this, the mosquitoes born in the garbage are flying away and going home.

They are claiming that mosquitoes, especially water hyacinth and various floating mosquitoes in the water, have spread everywhere.

Moreover, the infestation of Culex mosquitoes naturally increases at this time. And precautionary measure is also being taken to control Aedes mosquitoes, said officials of the health department of Dhaka North and South City Corporation.

In this regard, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Chief Executive Officer Selim Reza said, "The city dwellers may have noticed that due to our regular vigorous activities dengue outbreak occurred last year could not spread this year. Hopefully, this time we will succeed.”
