Mongla Port inner bar dredging project launched

The dredging project for Mongla Port inner bar area was unveiled on Saturday. State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury inaugurated the dredging programme by authorizing dredging work at Joymonirghol Food Silo area in Mongla port area in Bagerhat.

Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khaleque, Deputy Minister for Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Habibun Nahar MP, Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner ANM Foyzul Haque, Secretary for Shipping Ministry, Mejbah Chowdhury and other officials were present at the ceremony. The estimated budget for this project has been decided tk 7,937 million. This project is to ease up the process of handling ships measuring 9-10 meters of drafts. To achieve that, dredging will be conducted for a 19 km path from Joymonirghol to Mongla Port.

State Minister in the ceremony said, “Shipping industry will shine if channels are supervised by dredging project. This will open new job sectors in this field. Passenger and product transportation will also be less costly.”

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to bring back old river channels to ensure the flow of rivers. She plans to order a project of dredging 10,000 km of river route to achieve that,” he added.

Presided over by Port Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, other officials as Captain M Abdul Wadud Tarafdar, joint secretary Imtiaj Hossain, Director Gyas Uddin, project director Sheikh Shawkat Ali, were also present at the ceremony.
