Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed on Monday said that primarily they were not suspecting the explosion at Moghbazar as a subversive act.

He made the statement while briefing reporters after visiting the spot in the morning.

However, the police would initiate an investigation with bomb disposal unit, he added.

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Managing Director Ali Iqbal Md Nurullah said that they did not have any gas supply line in the affected area of Moghbazar.

He said that primarily it was suspected that an LPG cylinder blast might have caused the accident.

Meanwhile, the fire service formed a five-member probe committee, headed by Director (Operation and Maintenance) Lieutenant Colonel Zillur Rahman.

The three-storey building in Moghbazar that was heavily damaged may collapse any time, he said after visiting the site.

He said, "The building has been irreparably damaged.”

The building owner has to decide whether he will demolish it. It is not possible to use it any more, he said while replying to a query of the reporters.

None should enter the building for the sake of safety, he added.

Zillur said their teams are collecting evidence from the wreckage and recording statements of witnesses, the injured and owner of business outlets at the site.

He refused to comment on the cause of the explosion at this stage of investigation.

The Department of Explosive's Chief Inspector Engineer Abul Kalam Azad said that the presence of hydrocarbon has been detected at the scene of the Moghbazar explosion.

According to the initial findings, the blast may have been caused by the accumulation of different types of gas inside the building in Moghbazar Wireless Gate area in the capital.

The department will form a three-member probe body, the chief inspector said after visiting the location on Monday.

Seven people died so far and 50 others were admitted to different hospitals in the city with injuries caused by the explosion.
