Mind the tone

Colour is like food for the spirit – plus it’s not addictive or fattening and colours do feed the soul. Whether in fashion, design or life, it is a potent tool that can be used to inspire emotions, create space or simply set the mood. Colour therapy has been around since ancient times and involves balancing the body’s energies using specific colours. This summer, play with colours in home décor.

A hint of tint

Keep the walls and furniture neutral – off-white for walls and natural wood and leather for the furniture. Colour can set a mood in the room.

To add instant colour, use fresh flowers, books, or lampshades. Going for red in the bedroom boosts energy, stimulation, and the senses. Pick your tones well: cool and neutral combinations will keep you calm; warm colours make you more chatty and friendly; and bright colours give hope.

Hue let it out

Using coloured bulbs in corners or in special areas create mood. Go for a sunny yellow kitchen – not just because it’s a cheerful colour, but yellow can help with digestion, confidence, and getting your mind right – much like that morning cup of coffee or tea. It’s time to get some colourful thoughts.

Follow the palette

Use pink for tranquillity in a meditation roomOrange is best suited for a sick room, as the colour is associated with improved lung function and more energyGold and silver increase the flow of energy in the home and have a positive influence on our physical and mental wellbeingBright red gives the room a more energetic feel, while deeper red enhances the feeling of comfort

Use orange, ochre and red in south; green, aqua in east; shades of blue, grey or black in north; cream, gold, silver towards the west.

To add colour, paint a bookshelf in two shades.
