Published : 30 Mar 2021 09:10 PM

Bangladesh is about to enter the Metrorail era. In December this year, the first trial run of Metrorail will start from Dhaka’s Uttara to Agargaon. To that end, the first shipment of 6 railway coaches of Metrorail was scheduled to arrive at Mongla port in Bagerhat on Tuesday.

The foreign ship MVSPM Bangkok, which left the Japanese port of Kobe with these coaches, is now waiting to enter the port of Mongla. The ship will arrive at the Mongla port jetty with the state-of-the-art and valuable cargos of Metrorail.

After that the imported railway cars will be unloaded at yard no. 9 of the port, confirmed Md Ohiduzzaman, General Manager of Ancient Steamship Co. Ltd. the local shipping agent of the ship.

The official also said that the railway cars are being manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industry Company Ltd. of Japan and the importer is Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd. (DMTCL). 138 more railway cars will be imported, released and transported through Mongla port by 2021-2022, he added.

Earlier, valuable equipment including the reactor of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant came through Mongla port. As a result, the number of ships arriving at the port is increasing day by day.

This proves that the capacity of Mongla port has increased a lot. New projects have been undertaken to make this port more efficient and dynamic. If implemented, the port will get a whole new dimension internationally.

Port users Md Hanif and Md Asraf said there are more opportunities to use Mongla port now than at any time in the past. They also said that they are now in a profitable position to use the port as new and modern equipment has been installed.
