The meal rates of all residential halls of Islamic University have gone up on the campus in Kushtia on Friday.

A notification, signed by the hall provost council president Professor Dr Debshish Sharma, was issued in this regard in the afternoon.

According to the notification, the university hall authorities hiked the meal rates at Tk 12 instead of 10 for breakfast, 25 instead of 22 for lunch and 25 instead of 22 for dinner.

The price has been hiked several times but the university administration failed to provide quality food to its students, M Zakir Hossain, a residential student of IU Jatirpita Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall said. The residential halls were serving unhygienic and substandard stale food, where insects are often found, students of different halls of the university alleged.

Tasnim Ara Tuli, a residential student of Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall, said that the food price was hiked but no quality food has been served to them.

They hiked the meal rates of the halls as the price of all goods had gone up, IU hall provost council president Professor Dr Debashish Sharma said.

They submitted an application to the university vice-chancellor Professor Dr Shaikh Abdus Salam with a view to increasing the subsidies for the halls, he added.
