Today (Monday), 17 November, marks the 49th death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, the legendary political leader revered as “Majlum Jananeta”—the leader of the oppressed. To commemorate the day, his family members, Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), disciples, admirers, various political parties, and socio-cultural organisations are observing the occasion through a range of programmes at Santosh in Tangail.
Maulana Bhashani, the founding president of the Awami Muslim League, passed away on this day in 1976 while undergoing treatment at the then PG Hospital (now BSMMU) in Dhaka. He was later laid to rest at Santosh in Tangail.
Throughout his life, Maulana Bhashani remained a tireless fighter for the rights of the deprived, neglected, and working-class people. He inspired the masses to rise during national crises and led powerful movements in the interest of the people. His long political career was marked by selflessness and unwavering dedication to the country. Known for his modest lifestyle, he always placed national interest above personal gain. Even while being close to state power, he remained free from its temptations, staying simple, ascetic, and deeply committed to the welfare of the masses. His life reflected profound love for the people and a vision for a progressive, democratic, exploitation-free, and non-communal Bangladesh. He also played a crucial role in shaping the Bengali national identity.
Born on 12 December 1880 in Dhanbari village of Sirajganj, Maulana Bhashani spent a major part of his life in Santosh under the Tangail municipality. From his youth, he was involved in politics. He served for a long period as the president of the Muslim League for the then Bengal-Assam province. He was also one of the principal leaders behind the formation of the United Front during the 1954 elections. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he chaired the advisory committee of the Mujibnagar Government.
To mark his death anniversary, MBSTU authorities placed wreaths at his mausoleum at dawn today, followed by a commemorative rally. Throughout the day, various political parties and socio-cultural organisations will pay tribute by placing floral wreaths.
Disciples and followers of Maulana Bhashani have already gathered in large numbers at Santosh over the past several days. Meanwhile, a week-long “Bhashani Mela,” organised by the Maulana Bhashani Foundation, is underway, drawing huge crowds. The entire Santosh area turns into a vibrant hub of visitors on this occasion each year.
