Matarbari deep sea port will make great contribution to trade’

Chattogram Port Authority's Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said that if Matarbari deep sea port is implemented, commercial ships with the largest capacity will be able to anchor.  This port will create new possibilities in the country's import-export trade by connecting ASEAN countries including Myanmar-India.

 The 10 members of the Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of Shipping visited Matarbari Deep Sea Port on Sunday.  Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry Major (Retd.) Rafiqul Islam Bir Uttam MP led the parliamentary committee members MA Latif MP, Ranjit Kumar Roy MP, Aslam Hossain Saudagar MP, SM Shahzada MP, Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Real Admiral M. Shahjahan and other senior officials were present.

  Port Chairman said, Matarbari port has already constructed 250 meter wide and 14.3 km long channel.  This channel will be extended by another 100 meters to become a deep sea port.  Tenders have already been submitted for the construction of the port here.  Now the feasibility of the tender is under review.  The work will be started only after the tender is passed.  Matarbari deep sea port will go into operation in 2026.

After inspecting the project, members of the parliamentary committee said that the port will become a huge potential area for import and export of goods, which will act as a milestone in the country's economy.

Its known that the cost of this project is Tk 17 thousand 777 crore.  It will take another three years to implement.  However, the first jetty for the Matarbari Coal Power Plant was constructed two years ago.  111 ships docked there from December 29, 2020 to August 24 last year.  If it is fully implemented, it will be able to take berthing of ships of 350 meter width and 18 meter draft or length.
