A marine engineer was killed after being hit by a train while crossing the railway gate on a motorcycle in Santahar Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Nasim Ahmed Joy, 31, son of Abdur Razzak Master of Komarbhog Chaksunar village in Chhatiangram Union under the upazila.

The incident occurred at the Santahar rail crossing when the Dhaka-bound Lalmoni Express intercity train struck him while he was attempting to cross the tracks.

According to Government Railway Police and eyewitnesses, Joy had arrived home ten days earlier on vacation from the United States. He left home for Naogaon on his motorcycle. As he was crossing the Santahar railway gate, he was hit by the Lalmoni Express arriving from Lalmonirhat.

“Gatekeepers blew whistles, but he was not listening. He tried to cross the tracks carelessly and was struck by the train. His head, eyes, and face were crushed. His body was torn into several pieces and he died on the spot. The motorcycle was also destroyed,” said one witness.

Confirming the matter, Santahar Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibur Rahman said, “The accident occurred when he tried to cross the rail tracks carelessly with his motorcycle. Police recovered the body. Following a request from the family, it was handed over without autopsy.”

He added that a case of unnatural death has been filed with Santahar GRP Police Station in connection with the incident.
