Many families stranded for rainwater in Thakurgaon

More than 150 families in Thakurgaon have been inundated due to heavy rains for two consecutive days. The locals claimed, fragile drainage system is the cause of their suffering.

As many as 150 families in East Goalpara, Sarkarpara, Basirpara, Shantinagar, Milnagar, Shahpara, Road and Kolejpara areas of the municipal area have been inundated due to two days of heavy rains.

The upazila administration has provided relief to the flood-hit families. Samsuddin Alam of East Goalpara area said that rain water is trapped due to not cleaning the drains regularly. The surrounding area has been flooded. Water has entered people's homes.

Jamirul Islam of Milnnagar area said that the drainage system is so very fragile here. Today we have to be waterlogged due to the negligence of the municipality. This would not have happened if the drains had been cleaned.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rains, aman paddy seedbed, maize, vegetables and other crops have been submerged in water, the agriculture department said.

Aftab Hossain, deputy director of the district agriculture extension department, said 120 hectares of land in the district, including aman seedbed, had been submerged due to two days of heavy rains. If the water does not move in a few days, there is a danger that the crops might get destroyed.

Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Abdullah Al Mamun said that the citizens had to face waterlogging due to the negligence of the municipal authorities. 

We have delivered food aid to 150 waterlogged families. We are ready to deal with the flood.

Mayor of Thakurgaon Municipality Mirza Faisal Amin said, “Our cleaners regularly clean the drains in the municipal area. 

This waterlogging is caused by some people throwing wastage in the drains. We are working to clear the drains and release the waterlogging.
