Manirampur UZ Vice Chairman sent to jail over rice scam

A Jashore court has sent Uttam Chakraborty Bachchu, vice-chairman of Manirampur Upazila Parishad, to jail in connection with the theft of 549 sacks of relief rice.

When he surrendered before the Jashore District and Sessions Judge's Court on Sunday afternoon, Judge Ikhtiyarul Islam Mallick ordered him to be sent to jail.

On April 4, five trucks of government relief rice arrived at Manirampur in Jashore from Maheshwarpasha in Khulna. One truck of rice was secretly sent to the local rice mill without unloading in the godown.

Upon receiving the news, police raided the place and recovered 549 sacks of rice and arrested the mill owner and the truck driver.

According to the details of the case, SI Tapan Kumar of the police station filed a case against them at Manirampur police station for stockpiling rice through black market as they could not show any valid documents of the seized rice.

Manirampur Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Uttam Chakraborty Bachchu and several others were named in the confessional statement of the two detainees.

After the investigation, the police filed the chargesheet in the Jashore court accusing several others including the vice chairman.

According to the chargesheet, Uttam Kumar Chakraborty sold 549 sacks of relief rice worth Tk 480,000 to the black market in the hope of making more profit.

The other accused in the case are Quddus, son of Ekubbar Moral of Juranpur village and Jagodish Das, son of Robin Das, Abdullah Al Mamun, owner of a rice mill, son of late Lutfar Rahman of Vijayrampur village,Truck driver Farid Hawlader, son of late Solaiman Moral of Taherpur village and Ratan Hawlader of Maheshwarpasha village of Daulatpur, Khulna.
