A mobile court sentenced a man to seven days of imprisonment for cutting down government trees on the banks of a government pond in Nachol upazila of Chapainawabganj on Monday afternoon.
The convicted man was identified as Humayun Reza, son of Tabzul Muktar of Sarjan village under Gobaratala union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila. He had cut down five
mango trees on the bank of a government pond in Amlain village under Fatehpur union in Nachol upazila.
Khadija Begum, Assistant Commissioner (Land), conducted the mobile court and announced the punishment after confirming that the tree was government property by measuring the edge of the pond.
AC (Land) Khatija Begum said locals complained about cutting down several mango trees on the banks of a government pond in Amlain village of Fatehpur Union 14 days ago. Later, those who cut down the trees were instructed not to take the cut down trees and not to cut down new ones. Even after that, the mobile court was conducted for taking away the cut down trees and cutting down new ones.
She added that the convict and his family had been occupying the government pond for a long time. After decades, Nachol Upazila Land Office rescued the pond and leased it. She added that all such occupied government lands, ponds and properties in Nachol Upazila will be recovered soon.
