Man jailed, fined for illegal sand quarrying

A man has been fined Tk 50,000 and jailed for one month by a mobile court for illegally extracting and selling sand with a dredger machine in a residential area of Jibannagar in Chuadanga.

Jibannagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate SM Munim Lincoln conducted a mobile court on Saturday afternoon and fined the accused.

According to the mobile court, Golam Mostafa, 45, of Khaspara village in Jivannagar upazila was illegally extracting sand with a dredger machine and selling it in a residential area, ignoring government instructions. Nearby settlements are under threat due to sand extraction in populated areas and surrounding lands are collapsing. In this situation, the villagers lodged a complaint with the Jibannagar UNO.

SM Munim Lincoln, executive magistrate of the mobile court, said the raid was carried out in Pukamari village on the basis of complaints from villagers. Golam Mostafa has been fined Tk 50,000 and imprisoned for one month for illegally extracting sand and selling it without the permission of the administration. 

It has also been instructed to stop illegal sand extraction. The judge further said that strict legal action would be taken against anyone who illegally extracted and sold sand.
