Police picked a man with a firearm after a good beating by Dhaka University (DU) students for pointing a pistol at the protestors at Dhaka's Shahbagh area.
"During the Shahbagh intersection blockade program, one man driving a black Toyota Allion came out of the car and demanded that his car be allowed to pass through. When the students refused, he pulled out a pistol and aimed it at the students," Kanjilal, cultural secretary of Jagannath Hall union said.
“I saw him aiming the gun on a fellow student. This enraged the protesting students and they started beating him," he added.
Later, police intervened and rescued the man, also recovering a licensed shotgun from his car.
The man, Alif Rusdi Hasan Moon, 36, was taken to Shahbagh police station along with his wife and sister-in-law who got off from the car to rescue him.
Deputy Commissioner HM Azimul Haque of the DMP Ramna Division told journalists: “We have heard about the allegations raised by the students. We will investigate the issue. We recovered a licensed shot-gun from the car.”
An inspector-level official of Shahbagh police station informed that the protesting students had handed over the pistol which Alif allegedly used during the scuffle.
A Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club sticker was also found pasted in the front glass of Alif's car. The car’s both side-mirrors were vandalized by the agitators.
Shahbagh police station OC Abul Hasan said: “The man told us that he is involved in the manpower business.”
Later, police took the car to Shahbagh police station, with two unknown children sitting inside it.
