Police in Ukhiya arrested Mohammad Selim, a notorious fugitive linked to 13 serious crimes—including murder, abduction, drug trafficking, extortion, and violence against women and children—late Sunday night.
Selim, from the Painnashia area of Jaliapalong Union, is the son of Nurul Islam, locally known as ‘Gachh Kalu’.
According to Ukhiya Police Station records, Selim has been implicated in various crimes between 2008 and 2025. The charges against him include attempted murder, offences under the Explosives Act (Sections 3/4, 2025), the Special Powers Act, the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act, robbery, human trafficking, physical assault, and extortion.
Selim had been evading arrest for years and was listed as a warrant-listed criminal in all 13 cases.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Arif told Cox’s Bazar Journal that Selim’s arrest has brought relief to the local community. Legal proceedings are currently underway, and the police will continue similar operations to curb crime in the region.
