According to various farmers in Dinajpur district, the present government’s subsidy in the agricultural sector and various campaigns by the Agriculture Office have helped the farmers to get better.

The Department of Agriculture Extension has offices in 13 upazilas of Dinajpur. They are relentlessly providing various assistance and training to the farmers in agriculture. Going to the ground, it has been seen that a popular method of identifying insects and spiders in the paddy fields of farmers in Dinajpur Chirirbandar Upazila is called light trap.

Day by day, farmers of the upazila are becoming interested in this agri-friendly method. At present, this light trap is being set up in 36 blocks of 12 unions of the upazila with the initiative of Upazila Agriculture Office and overall cooperation of Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officers to check the presence of insects and spiders in the field of aman crop in the evening. This method has now become popular among farmers.

Visiting different areas of the upazila, it was seen that Aman is catching various insects in the paddy field by lighting water in a container filled with water and in a paddy field. Farmers themselves can easily determine which pesticide should be applied before the insects attack the paddy field by observing the presence of these insects in the land.

Using this method, the farmers themselves are able to apply any medicine in their aman field in collaboration with the local agricultural officer. In this way, the farmers of this area are able to build resistance system before the insect attack.

Many farmers in the area are currently using very few pesticides using light traps. As a result, the cost of farmers is coming down a lot and the amount of paddy production is also increasing. So this time the farmers of the upazila are expecting bumper yield of aman paddy.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, this light trap is being held in different unions almost every evening to monitor the presence of insects and spiders in the paddy fields of the upazila recently.

Upazila Agriculture Officer and agriculturist Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan said it is a readily available method. Farmers can easily use this method to build protection against insects and spiders by eating rice. On the other hand, low cost paddy production is increasing.
