Chuadanga's rail crossings are operating at a risky pace due to various problems, including unauthorised, unsecured rail gates and a shortage of gatemen.
Local sources said incidents like casualties often occur. The railway authorities have responsibly put up a signboard at the illegal railway gates. Pedestrians, small and large vehicles, and various types of animals roam freely on the railway lines without gates and gatemen. Pedestrians and shopkeepers work for the safety of those moving in the legal and illegal gate areas of these areas. Whenever it is time for a train to arrive, they come to the gate and instruct people to travel carefully for safety reasons.
Although the locals have repeatedly raised the issue with the higher authorities, the problem has not been resolved. Many say that incidents like this are happening due to lack of awareness. For the sake of safety, people should walk carefully on the railway lines.
Jagadish Chandra Basu, in-charge of Chuadanga GRP outpost, said, "In the last seven months, 9 people have died after being run over by a train in Chuadanga. The police have taken legal action in each incident. Most recently, a young man died after being run over by a train near an illegal rail gate in Amirpur village. It was a tragic incident. There needs to be a rail gate here."
Chuadanga Railway Assistant Executive Engineer Golam Mostafa said, there are 30 legal railway gates in the Chuadanga section. Out of which, 15 gates have no gateman. How can we provide security at illegal places where legal gates are risky? People have built roads over the railway lines for easy walking. We have nothing to do here. We have informed the higher authorities about the manpower shortage at legal gates. A solution is possible only if we get gatemen.
According to the railway's calculations, there are 5 illegal gates. This number could be much higher. The first train service started from Kolkata over Chuadanga in 1862. Since then, there has been train service. Currently, intercity, mail and goods trains are operating on the railway in different districts of the country. Due to the ease of travel by train, people have become very dependent on train travel.
The people of Amirpur village in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila have built a road to cross the railway line. Students, pedestrians and other small and large vehicles regularly use it.
On July 8, 2025, a young man named Jibon Ali from the same village was killed after being hit by a train at the Amirpur railway gate.
On the night of July 5, an unidentified person died after being hit by a train near the railway gate in Bedbari area of Munshiganj. Casualties occurred while traveling through here.
The locals have long demanded that a railway gate be installed and a gateman be assigned.
