Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that if law and order cannot be maintained to keep pace with development, then at one stage development will also come to a halt.

He made the remark while inaugurating the office of the district superintendent of police at Gate No. 2 of Sholashahar in the city on Friday.

He said the country is moving forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.  “If we can't maintain law and order keeping pace with her, then that progress will also be stopped.  That is why, the police are ready to face any challenge”, he added.

Regarding the death of writer Mushtaq, who was lodged in Kashimpur Jail, the home minister said, "Writer Mushtaq Ahmed violated the law and hurt the faith of others in his writings.  That is why many people filed lawsuits against him.  He was recently lodged in Kashimpur Jail due to a case.  I got the news from IG Prison that when Mushtaq Ahmed suddenly fell ill, he first got medical treatment at the prison hospital.  He was later taken to Tajuddin Memorial Hospital in Gazipur where he died.”

However, the home minister said, it will be investigated whether there is any negligence on the part of the jail authorities in this regard. The home minister said legal action would be taken against Bangladeshis involved in compiling the Al Jazeera report.
