Lakshmipur flood: Agri, fisheries sectors suffer Tk 610cr losses

Although the flood situation has improved in Lakshmipur until Sunday afternoon, the floodwater is receding slowly. Some people of the flood-hit areas started returning to their houses. The damage due to the flood are being visible now. Huge damage was done in agriculture and fisheries sector due to the flood in the district.

Four municipalities of five upazilas and 265 villages of the district are still inundated. Many people are still marooned.

However, due to the upstream onrush from hill and sporadic rain causes slow improvement of the flood situation. 

Water Development Board Executive Engineer Nahid Ud-Zaman said it will take few more days to recede the floodwater. The water of Meghna River is flowing much under the danger level. Many infrastructures, crops of the lands, fishes of the ponds and cattle were damaged due to the second time flood in the district. Many solvent families have lost everything in the flood. Moreover, the snake menace and water-borne diseases are increasing in the flood-hit areas. Huge damage was done in agriculture and fisheries sector.

District Department of Agricultural Extension officer Sohel Md Samsuddin Firoz, in his primary statement about agriculture sector, said a total of 47 thousand 285 heaters cropland including Aman seedbed, paddy field, fruits and vegetables, are inundated due to the flood. The seasonal crops at 31 thousand 124 hectares of land are almost completely damaged. Among them, Aman seedbed, Ropa Aman, Aus paddy, vegetables, fruits, spices and other plants were damaged. Many public and private nurseries were also damaged due to the long lasting flood. The amount of the loss is around Tk 400 crore. 

On the other hand, the fisheries sector has been damaged almost hundred percent sue to the flood. District Fisheries Officer Md Billal Hossain said the fishes of the ponds and enclosures of the district are almost damaged completely. The fishes of 30 thousand ponds have washed away. The amount of loss is Tk 210 crore.

As the water is receding, the water-borne diseases, including diarrhea, cold-related diseases, pneumonia and skin disease, are increasing. The snakemenace is also increasing. Some 50 patients were admitted to 10-bed diarrhea ward of Zila Sadar Hospital on Sunday. Moreover, around 350 patients, including diarrhea patients, got admitted in 100-bed hospital on Sunday. The Residential Medical Officer of the hospital, Orup Chandra Paal, confirmed the matter. 

Meanwhile the snake menace has increased due to long lasting flood in Lakshmipur, District Health Department said.

There is a huge crisis of safe drinking water. The communication system has also damaged due to the flood. Although huge relief items have been reached in the affected areas, there is an allegation that many flood-hit people in the remote areas are not getting adequate relief goods. 

Meanwhile, along with the administration, the members of Bangladesh Army have been working tirelessly to distribute relief items to the flood-affected people. Many private organisations have also come forward to help the flood-hit people.
