Lakshmipur BCL leader injured in attack dies in Dhaka

M Sajib Mahmud, President candidate of Chandraganj Kafiluddin University College Chhatra League Unit under Lakshmipur district succumbed to his injuries at Popular Hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday morning.

A tense situation has been prevailing at  Chandraganj Bazar area of Lakshmipur following the news of the death of Sajib who was fatally injured in gunfire by the terrorists on the night of April 12 at the Chandraganj area. 

Agitated leaders and activists of a faction of the local unit of Awami League and its front organisations took out processions in protest against the murder of Sajib by blocking the road connecting to Chandraganj Bazar. 

Later, police intercepted and brought the situation under control. 

A meeting was held after the procession which was addressed, among others, by the Vice-President of Chandraganj thana AL Sabbir Ahmed, Wahiduzzaman Beg Bablu, President and the General Secretary of Chandraganj Union AL Gias Uddin Liton and Kazi Solaiman respectively, General Secretary of the district Chhatra League Shahadat Hossain Bhuiyan and the President of Chandraganj thana Chhatra League Abu Taleb. 

The speakers at the meeting gave a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest and punish the killers of Sajib, otherwise, they warned to announce a further staunch programme.

Assassinated Sajib was the son of late Siraj Mia of the Chandraganj Panchpara area. He was married and has a five-year-old girl child.

Buli Begum, mother of the deceased claimed, Sajib had a financial deal with Swechhasebak League leader Bablu and recently both of them locked into an altercation and dispute over the issue. She further mentioned, Bablu also threatened to kill Sujon over the monetary dissent. 

Buli Begum and relatives of Sujon further claimed Sajib was brutally killed by gunshots and stabbing in a pre-planned way. Three more Chhatra League activists were also injured in the incident. 

They demanded exemplary punishment of the killers of Sajib. 

Emdadul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Chandraganj Police Station informed, Buli Begum, mother of Sajib, filed a case accusing 11 persons by mentioning their names and 18 to 20 more unidentified persons in the incident of attack and gun-fire on her son and other three BCL activists on Monday night.

 Later, the Police arrested five accused persons including the Member of Thana Secchasebak League Tajul Islam Taju Bhuiyan and sent them to jail. 

The drive is continuing to arrest other accused persons, informed the Officer Incharge. The dead body of the deceased Sajib was being taken to Lakhmipur from Dhaka on Thursday.

It is learnt on the night of 12 April, on the way to their returning home from a Waz Mahfil, terrorists attacked Chhatra League activists Sajib, Saiful Patwari, Rafi and Saiful Islam Joy near Joider Pukurpar area of Chandraganj Panchpara injuring them fatally. 

When their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to a hospital in Dhaka where Sujon succumbed to his injuries on  Wednesday early morning.
